Business ecosystems have become a novel type of value system in all economic sectors. Many of the world’s largest and most valuable companies operate with business ecosystem approaches. The lack of a uniform understanding of business ecosystems’ features and characteristics make it difficult for decision makers in companies to develop and implement effective business ecosystem strategies. We created a morphology that describes all value systems and applied it to business ecosystems. We link business ecosystem characteristics to current interorganizational research and also help practitioners
operationalize the concept of business ecosystems. Companies can use the managerial implications we provide to leverage ecosystems and co-create value.
Understanding the Organizational Impact of Robotic Process Automation: A Socio-Technical Perspective
(2022)
Interest in AI-driven automation software is growing constantly across
all industries, as these technologies enable companies to almost automate administrative processes completely and significantly increase operational efficiency.
However, many implementation attempts fail due to a lack of understanding of how these technologies affect the various socio-technical aspects that are intertwined in an organisation. This leads to a widening gap between value propositions of automation software and the ability of companies to exploit them. For long-term
success, collaboration between humans and software robots in the organization must be optimised. Therefore, the social, technical, and organizational impact of Robotic Process Automation was investigated. Following a socio-technical systems approach, a model was developed and validated in a use case of a company in the mechanical engineering sector. Knowing the influencing factors before launching large-scale automation initiatives will help practitioners to better exploit
efficiency potentials and increase the long-term success.
In the course of the advancing digitalization, new business fields are characterized by a mixture of competition and cooperation of the actors involved. MOORE (1993) postulates that in analogy to natural ecosystems, long-term successful companies also operate in comparable network structures. In this context, there are pronounced controversies about the extent to which there are leading actors in such a business ecosystem and to what extent they can control the entire system. Similarly, it is largely unclear where the boundaries of a business ecosystem actually lie and how meaningful selective boundaries are. Especially the extent of the coopetition proves to be characteristic for the relationship between the involved actors. Therefore, the aim of this research approach is to develop a new approach for the analysis of corporate ecosystems. To ensure applicability, the developed approach was validated in a current case study in the telecommunications industry.
