Growing information systems (IS) often come along with growing IT complexity, because of emerging rag rug landscapes. This development causes rising IT costs and dependencies, which hinder the maintenance and expansion of the IS landscape. This article outlines the current research on published and presented methods to manage the rising IT complexity in a literature review. Because definitions of “IT complexity” vary a lot in literature, this paper also includes a definition of the term. In addition to that, it delivers a presentation of the used research methodology. Subsequently, it presents the findings in literature, highlights the research gap and – based on the literature analysis – presents the steps that need to be taken. A discussion of the results and a summary complete the article.

In the age of digitalization, IT strategies are becoming increasingly important. This is due to the fact that corporate IT is the key enabler of digitalization. In many companies, however, corporate IT is not well-aligned with the overall organizational strategy, preventing it from providing the best possible value for the different organizational units. A major challenge is posed by what we term IT complexity, which reduces efficiency and generates high costs for the corporate IT department.
This white paper outlines solutions for companies facing this issue. First, we provide an overview of the relevant terms and highlight the challenges confronting enterprises today. Central to this paper, we describe a four-step approach for the design development of an IT strategy. We introduce various tools with which to assess the current situation and identify relevant aspects of the business environment. Subsequently we outline an approach to strategy formulation and describe tools for strategy implementation and monitoring. Finally, an outlook into the future highlights what companies need to do to thrive into the future.
Factory automation and production are currently
undergoing massive changes, and 5G is considered being a key
enabler. In this paper, we state uses cases for using 5G in the
factory of the future, which are motivated by actual needs of the
industry partners of the “5Gang” consortium. Based on these use
cases and the ones by 3GPP, a 5G system architecture for the
factory of the future is proposed. It is set in relation to existing
architectural frameworks.
The aim of the related research project eCloud is to enable small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to implement flexible energy management without in-depth energy knowledge and with little distraction from day-to-day business, which is prepared for current and future challenges in the field of energy use. The overall result is a validated prototype for a plug and automate capable (i.e. without implementation effort) operational energy management, which can be successively set up in SMEs based on a cloud platform. Through its gradual and modular implementation, energy management meets the individual needs of each company and contributes to energy system transformation and climate protection by reducing energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 25%. In total, three expansion stages are available with the levels of monitoring, load management and grid usage, which consist of various Software as a Service (SaaS) modules from the cloud that can be retrieved as required. Thus, the user only needs a minimal hardware intervention in his production and saves a complex IT infrastructure. The methodology developed has been successfully applied by two user companies so far. This proves the effectiveness of the method.
People with tremor find it often very difficult to use IT services and therefore attain very low levels of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction, when doing so. The currently available user interfaces do not guarantee sufficient precision for information input. Individuals suffering from intention tremor show a significant worsening when moving towards a button, precisely because target-oriented movements produce shaking in the affected body parts. For this target group a new method regarding the information input has been developed and evaluated. This technique enables the persons concerned to input information on a touch screen by using a wiping movement. Variations caused by the tremor are compensated with a continuous movement rather than a single direct movement towards a target field. Moreover, the screen surface causes a significant friction that helps to damp tremor forces. The user input can be identified by the computer with high accuracy by means of special heuristics which also assist barrier free access among the target group.
The digital transformation brings up various new tasks to manage new business application software and integrate them into existing business processes and legacy systems, which are necessary to keep e.g. a production system running. Today, all these tasks are on the one hand not clearly defined and on the other hand, responsibility of these cross-disciplinary tasks is unclear in companies being mostly structured in a function-oriented way. While quality management has developed to a firmly established function of process excellence years ago, IT-application management is still to become an inevitable part of the digital transformation. There are just a few authors trying to define and describe this part, the related tasks, and necessary roles in an organization. In this paper, we show how the business needs of a company can influence the ideal adaptation of the digitization solutions and thus become the success of the digital transformation. We base the paper on a use case in manufacturing companies. We then describe how companies deal with business application systems today. Based on the framework Aachen Digital Architecture Management we describe how a company can holistically improve the management of business application systems.
For most industries, Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds substantial potentials. In the last decades, the extent of data created worldwide is exponentially increasing, and this trend is likely to continue. However, despite the prospects, many companies are not yet using AI at all or not generating added value. Often, an AI project does not exceed its pilot phase and is not scaled up. The problems to create value from AI applications in companies are manifold, especially since AI itself is diverse and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. One often stated obstacle, why many AI projects fail, is a missing AI strategy. This leads to isolated solutions, which do not consider synergies, scalability and seldom result in added value for the company. To create a company-specific AI strategy with a top-down approach, a generic but holistic framework is needed. This paper proposes a strategic AI procedure model that enables companies to define a specific AI strategy for successfully implementing AI solutions. In addition, we demonstrate in this paper how we apply the introduced strategic AI procedure model on an AI-based flexible monitoring and regulation system for power distribution grid operators in the context of an ongoing research project.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown companies that their on-premise infrastructures often reach their limits with a large number of remote accesses. The transition to cloud-based solutions could represent a more efficient alternative. However, many German companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), are still hesitant to take this big step of transferring applications to the cloud. For this reason, this paper examines the question of whether existing migration approaches in the analysis phase fit the specific requirements of SMEs. Using a literature review methodology, we first identify and analyze determinant factors for cloud adoption in SMEs. On this basis, we analyze existing methods in the analysis phase for migrations from on-premise software to cloud solutions. We investigate whether these factors are considered in the analysis phase of the approaches and conclude their suitability for SMEs. Of the migration approaches we examined, none included all the factors we identified as relevant to SMEs. Fewer have considered all factors fully and in detail. We present the results of the literature search process in tabular form and conclude this paper with a discussion and synthesis of the literature as well as an outlook on further research fields.
Networked digitalisation as an enabler for smart products and data-based business models presents companies with numerous and diverse challenges on their way through the digital transformation. Various reference architecture models have been developed in recent years to support these companies. A detailed analysis of these and in particular their use by companies quickly showed that currently existing reference models have major weaknesses in their practical suitability. With the Aachen Digital Architecture Management (ADAM), a framework was developed that specifically addresses the weaknesses of existing reference architectures and specifically takes up their strengths. As a holistic model, specially developed for use by companies, ADAM structures the digital transformation of companies in the areas of digital infrastructure and business development starting from customer requirements. Systematically, companies are enabled to drive the design of the digital architecture, taking into account design fields. The description of the design fields offers a detailed insight into the essential tasks on the way to a digitally networked company. The model is not only a structuring aid, but also contains a construction kit with the design fields to configure the procedure in the digital transformation. The procedure differentiates between the development of the digitalisation strategy and the implementation of the digital architecture. Three different case studies also show how ADAM is used in industry, what structuring support it can provide and how the digital transformation can be configured. The breadth and depth of ADAM enable companies to take the path of digital transformation systematically and in a structured manner, without ignoring the value-creating components of digitalisation. This qualifies ADAM as a sustainability-oriented framework, as it places the economic scaling, needs-based adaptation and future-oriented robustness of solution modules in the focus of digital transformation.
